My sincere and deep apologies
to the quail on the Ravendale Highway
that scurried to safety in brushy shadows
on the right-hand side of the road
and then, for some inexplicable reason,
flew into the path of my truck,
and vanished in a burst of feathers.
I apologize to your children, your lover,
I apologize for not slowing, not stopping
to show respect for lost life.
Some day I too will fly
into a burst of feathers.

I think you couldn't have saved it.. it was destined.. and we all are moving towards our destinies as the days unfold.. feeling for the loss itself shows that you are filled with kindness.. It is so very touching.. God bless!!!
it happens....love this..!!
What a heartfelt piece. We often do not stop and mourn nature and its creatures all around us. I really like this poem and the spirit it was written in.
compassion is one of the signs of being human, and humane. these things happen, and are beyond one's control.
the only thing one can possibly do is to say a heart felt prayer -in ones mind.
Sad it had to be this way!! But for some inexplicable reason, it had to go that way!!
Nicely worded!!
ohhh this is magical... we have them out here too and my heart aches to stop in time... i like that, the end... feathers in flight..
